Meridian Students Celebrate New Playground
Safe, Accessible, and Full of Joy
August 25, 2025
For the students at Meridian, this school year began with more than new teachers and classrooms — it began with a brand-new playground built just for them.
Over the summer, Educational Service Unit 13 (ESU 13) led a complete renovation of the Meridian playground, turning an outdated and limiting space into one that is safe, inclusive, and designed to welcome every child.
Why This Playground Matters
“Meridian is a Level Three program, which means we serve students with significant and complex support needs,” explained Jessica Broderick, ESU 13’s Director of Special Education. “This playground was designed to give every student—regardless of mobility or sensory needs—a safe, accessible place to play, learn, and grow. We know that play is learning, and now those opportunities are available to all of our students.”
The old playground, with pea gravel surfacing and aging equipment, meant that play was often difficult for some of our children and sometimes not completely safe. The new design changes that.
New Features Students Love
The playground includes adaptive swings with molded seats and safety harnesses, an in-ground trampoline accessible for wheelchair users, a two-person spin pod, a modern merry-go-round, outdoor musical instruments, and turf with inlay games like hopscotch and tic-tac-toe. There’s even a practice mound for walking on uneven surfaces — a fun way to build important skills.
Most importantly, these features encourage children of all abilities to play together.
A True Team Effort
Behind the new playground is a story of teamwork, generosity, and dedication. ESU 13’s Facilities and Maintenance Crew worked tirelessly to prepare and build the space, with support from ESU 13 staff, volunteers, and even Administrator Dr. Laura Barrett, who lent a hand with installation.
Local businesses, including Bluffs Tree Service and 5 S Lawn Care, also stepped up with in-kind equipment support, helping bring the project to life.
“This was truly a team effort,” said Broderick. “So many people came together to make this possible, and the joy we’re seeing on students’ faces makes every bit of it worth it.”
More Than a Playground
What makes this project special is that it’s not just about play. It’s about equity, access, and joy. It’s about ensuring that every child, no matter their abilities, can experience the laughter, learning, and friendships that happen on a playground.
The transformation was captured in a short film highlighting the renovation process, student joy, and community impact.
